It’s a bit ironic that people line up for hours just to score a few measly deals right after Thanksgiving. That day after Thanksgiving known as Black Friday has gained a negative reputation for countless violence and even deaths.

The sales are great but unfortunately go hand in hand with violent behaviour. While it should be a cause for celebration, some see it as a day better spent indoors. But don’t lose hope.

This year, the Holy Angels Catholic Community will hold its very first Rainbow Friday. According to Holy Angels Catholic Community staff, they will not only make Black Friday the biggest shopping day people will have but it will also become the biggest days of giving. This year, the Holy Angels aim to “give the gift of giving”.

Holy Angels, in partnership with Boomerangs, Hidden Secrets (Pet Project), Out of the Closet and Poverello, have organized a donation drive in order to obtain items so that the less fortunate in the community will have varied options for shopping. People are encouraged to bring items of “gift quality” this Friday after Thanksgiving. Donation stations will be organized by non-profit thrift stores in the Alibi parking lot and to add spice to the festive event, those who attend can listen to the music stylings of DJ Maximus 3000.

Poverello aims to provide food and other basic necessities for Broward County residents who are affected with HIV/AIDS. They will be collecting canned goods, personal hygiene items and non-perishable food for the Holiday Food Drive. Those who are not able to bring food donations, they can donate cash by simply texting “EAT” to 50555 as well as through mobile credit card purchases.

Out of the Closet on the other hand provides free HIV and STD testings for different people, courtesy of AHF. For every item sold, 96 cents per dollar is given to the organization (AHF) for both prevention and treatment.

And that’s not all! Rainbow Friday also aims to help out not just humans but our local furry friends too! The Pet Project extends its help by giving pet supplies and food to people who are financially challenged.

So get ready for this year’s most colourful days! Come and take part in the Rainbow Friday which will take place on November 29 from 2PM to 7PM in the Alibi parking lot. Visit the Rainbow Friday website for more information.
