Joel Stedman, one of the founding board members of Miami Beach Gay Pride, has just been named the new chairman of the organization! The sixth annual installment of the popular community-wide event will be held on April 11 – 13, 2014.
Before he was elected chairperson, Stedman sat on the volunteer board as director of the Pride Festival. He’s also one of the owners of Twist, one of South Beach’s hot spots, which just recently celebrated its 20 years in the business.
According to hotspotsmagazine.com, increasing fundraising for next year’s Pride is one of Stedman’s goals as chair. He also adds, “People in the community don’t necessarily realize that Pride is a stand-alone, non-profit entity supported by sponsorships and individual donations. It takes a lot of money to produce a free event.”
Ever since it was started years ago, Miami Beach Gay Pride grew from a neighborhood gathering to a global event which features top performers such as Adam Lambert last April. But it’s not just the audience and entertainment which grew. Attendance has grown from 15,000 spectators to an estimated 80,000 from 2009 to 2013, attracting not just South Floridians but visitors from all over the world!
Last April’s event also included 66 parade entries and 1,200 participants. The Pride Festival featured 125 LGBT-friendly vendors and businesses plus refreshments, two stages of entertainment, a family-friendly play area and fireworks.
The Miami Beach Gay Pride aims to bring members and allies of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community together in celebration of the unique sprit and culture of the LGBT community. The entire Pride board is composed of volunteers, who are responsible for producing safe, quality, mass-appeal events which are open to the entire community, including the Parade, Festival and allied Miami Beach Gay Pride Sanctioned events.
Miami Beach gay Pride is produced with the support of the Miami Beach Visitors and Convention Authority. For more information, visit www.miamibeachgaypride.com.
